A Journey Through Uncertainty – DevRetro2022

2022 has been a year of adventure and growth for me. It all started in January when I made a life-changing decision to pursue my passion in the tech industry. But before I delve into that, let me provide some context.

January 2020, I was a final year student at a government polytechnic college in a village in West Bengal, studying Electrical Engineering. I was an average student with a simple dream of having a job and a peaceful life. One day, our Training & Placement Officer came to our class with the announcement of the first campus placement of our batch. We were all excited about the interview and started preparing for it. The day finally arrived, and to my surprise, I was the only student selected from my college for the job. I was overjoyed and couldn't wait to start my new career.

But then COVID-19 hit, and everything became uncertain again. The company started delaying the joining date and new companies stopped coming for placements. After months of frustration and anxiety, they finally contacted me to join as an intern. I was thrilled to have the opportunity, but I had no idea what kind of job I would be doing there. As it turned out, the company was a concrete manufacturer and most of my work had nothing to do with my career goals. To top it off, it was a 12 to 13-hour job with two to three weeks of night shift per month and hardly any weekends off.

I took the risk of becoming jobless again in search of a better job. And that's where the real adventure began.

Despite my disappointment, I knew I had to continue working there due to my financial situation. But I was constantly on the lookout for other opportunities. Finally, after more than a year of working there, I took the risk of becoming jobless again in search of a better job. And that's where the real adventure began.

January 2022, I got admission to a tier 3 college for a B. Tech in Electrical, but this time it was feeling like Electrical Engineering is not my thing, and I'm not enjoying this. Continued college, but besides that, I was preparing for govt jobs. After doing this for almost 3 to 4 months and appearing at some exams, I realized that it wasn't for me. I wasn't enjoying my studies and couldn't bring myself to memorize high school history and geography again to pass the exams. Around the same time, I met some people who were working in the IT industry and the startup boom was all over social media. Every week, it seemed like a new company was becoming a unicorn. I figured the IT sector was rapidly growing and decided to give it a try.

I had already been introduced to coding in college as an optional subject, and I enjoyed it. So, I started researching where and how to start learning. After watching tons of YouTube videos, I decided to learn either C++ or Java and master DSA. I chose C++ and started learning DSA from YouTube videos. But again, I wasn't enjoying it. I was just solving random mathematical questions or making star patterns, not building anything meaningful. I was lost and didn't know what to do next.

One day, while randomly browsing YouTube, I stumbled upon the channel of Hitesh Choudhary . After binge-watching his videos, I decided to learn web development first. I thought that building something would keep me motivated and help me learn more. This time, things went as planned. I completed HTML CSS from documentation and YouTube videos, and after a few weeks, I made my first website using only HTML and CSS. It was a simple website, but I was proud of it. At this point, I knew I was enjoying this, and I wanted to continue. I joined a live course launched by the same person and started learning Full Stack Web Development from scratch. Within a short period, I learned JavaScript and built many exciting projects. I also learned several frontend libraries and frameworks, built tons of projects on them to gain confidence, and wrote articles on various technical topics to improve my knowledge and gain more confidence in these topics. Recently, I have also started learning Backend development.

Conclusion: Now is the time to conclude this article, but my journey is far from over. I'm still learning exciting things every day and building projects to improve my skills. I'm excited to see where this journey takes me next. Hope I will be able to share a more positive and exciting article for #DevRetro2023 🙂.
